Mojitos are a favorite of my husband’s, so we make them a lot. He loves the combination of mint and lime juice, but he really loves that mojitos aren’t overly sweet.
Personally, I love anything with cherries, so this drink was a hit!

Club soda keeps the drink from being too sweet and it keeps the calories low on the drink as well. If you’re watching your carbs, replace the sugar with a sugar alternative like Swerve.
We use a cherry pitter to make pitting cherries easier. It’s really easy to use, especially if you need to pit a lot of cherries.
I bought a new, wooden muddler and I like it more than my old one. It muddles without tearing the mint leaves. More importantly, it’s pretty!
To save time, you can skip the simple syrup and mix everything in the muddling process.
How to Make a Simple Syrup for Mojitos
Mix equal parts of sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. We added fresh pitted cherries to the mixture for more cherry flavor.
We also used Moonshine cherries in our drinks. If you haven’t tried these, you should! They’re much stronger than you think they will be, so be careful.
What kind of rum do you use in mojitos?
For this batch of mojitos, we just used white rum. I’ve used dark rum for a stronger rum flavor. You can also use flavored rums. There are even black cherry flavored rums!
These black cherry mojitos combine the flavors of mint, lime juice and cherries to make the perfect refreshing summer drink.
- 10 mint leaves
- 1 squeezed lime
- 16 oz club soda
- 2 oz rum
- Simple Syrup:
- 1/2 c sugar
- 1/2 c water
- 6-10 pitted cherries
- Make a simple syrup by combining equal parts of sugar and water.
- Add pitted cherries.
- Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Let cool.
- Muddle together the mint, lime juice and 3-4 tsp of the cherry simple syrup.
- Add club soda and rum.
- Garnish with maraschino (or Moonshine!) cherries.
- Add ice as desired.
Add more or less sugar to taste.
To save time, you can skip making the simple syrup and muddle the 3-4 tsp (per drink) of sugar with the mint leaves, lime juice and cherries.
