ORC: Tropical Tiki Sunroom Makeover Plans

Sharing is caring!

Even before I blogged, I looked forward to April and October so much. The One Room Challenge is my favorite event in blogland and it’s time! Big thanks to Linda for organizing and motivating us to conquer a room in 6 short weeks. On Wednesdays, the 20 featured designers share their progress and on Thursday, the guest participants share. Last year there were over 200 participants and the results were amazing. For this One Room Challenge, we will be making over our sunroom. With summer around the corner, we practically live outside, so our sunroom made the most sense to tackle next.

This was how it looked last summer. Not bad, but could be so much better. It doesn’t get used very much in the winter unless my daughter has trashed her room so badly that she has run out of space to play. 😉

Sunroom last summer. I wish it was this clean now…

As of 2 days ago, my plans were pretty simple. I wanted to keep the DIY pretty light with only one big project. Every single weekend was carefully planned and seemed pretty easy. I was trying to be kind to my husband because I know that he has his eyes on a really big backyard project that is a little terrifying. So over the past weekend, we started cleaning the room out to get it ready. We used it as a work room during our snowstorm, so it was a bit trashed.

There’s a weird sink with the world’s longest hose attached because the previous owner was super into gardening. I’ve never been able to water my plants without just making a mess. The hose has to go. Plus the cabinet is falling apart and gross.

Our demo was only supposed to consist of ripping out the sink and cabinet (which crumbled to pieces as we removed it.) Now the room looks like this.

My lovely husband decided that if we’re going to do the room, we should do it 100% and to him that means ripping out the tile that always looks dirty no matter how much bleach I put on them. I think my crazy fun staircase makeover inspired him a little too much!

So my plans for simply painting the grout turned into new flooring and I’m pretty excited.

My to do list

  • Paint the walls (with a fun shibori treatment)
  • Plank the bottom part of the walls
  • New budget friendly flooring. So excited about this. Hint: it’s my favorite color…
  • Make new cushions for the existing furniture
  • Install cabinets and sink
  • Exciting countertop DIY!
  • Open shelving above cabinets
  • Build a bar with a carved tiki inspired motif
  • Paint existing armoire in fun design
  • Add LOTS of plants

The room has a lot of my normal colors, but I think it will feel entirely different than the rest of my house. In a good way. Whew! I’m exhausted just thinking about how much work this is turning out to be.

  1. This is TOO fun! I am loving all the vintage lighting I see. Super jealous of your sunroom. Can’t wait to see where it goes!

    1. Thanks Brittany. The sunroom is one of these reasons why we bought the house. It’s probably the best room in it. 🙂

  2. I love everything about this! The overall design, the size of the space (so nice to have!), the shibori wall treatment you are going to do (love shibori, can’t wait to see!), and the fact that your husband decided to go 100% on it and ripping the flooring out (he’s a keeper, lol!) . Looking forward to seeing the space completed!

  3. Such a pretty green. Love it when our husbands see the big picture without us having to say it? Mine came up with crown molding?

  4. It’ll be such an oasis when you’re done! Wow! Such a pretty design board and looks like you’re well on your way!

  5. I love your plans – I’m especially intrigued by the wallpaper and fabric (I think it’s fabric?) on your mood board. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

    1. Thanks Lizzie! The palm fabric is Balmoral Opal by Richloom and the other fabrics are by Premiere Prints. I’m considering designing my own through Spoonflower to use instead though.
