$100 Room Challenge: Moody Tween Girl Room Plans

Sharing is caring!

How do you decorate a child’s room when you have vastly different ideas for the space? I remember the good old days when I could be smug about the fact that my children held no alliance to any characters. How I laughed at my friends whose children were obsessed with the princesses. My daughter was more likely to come up with her own princess character to dress up as, part princess, part superhero, totally badass and unique.

In the past year, that has changed. I keep hoping she will move on from this phase, but it looks like she’s pretty into it. You see, my daughter is obsessed with Five Nights at Freddy’s also known as FNAF. I need to join a support group: Mothers of FNAF Fans. If you’re unfamiliar, you’re so lucky. It’s a game about animatronic creatures (think Chuck E Cheese) coming to life and killing people.

Pretty dark for a kid, right? It’s not very surprising when you know that I’m obsessed with true crime podcasts, so maybe we’re not so different. Anyways, she’s totally over the pink room and has requested a FNAF/goth room. So today, I’m sharing my moody tween girl room plans!

So how do you decorate when you HATE the idea? Good thing I like a challenge!

Well, first you do it on a budget, because her obsessions are normally quick to fade (fingers crossed). I’m joining Erin from Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry for the $100 room challenge. Every week, I’ll be updating the progress on this room as I update it on a budget. Her room is already pretty nice but with some simple changes, it will be the moody preteen goth room she dreams of, that I can actually stand.

Her Current Room:

I redid her room when I first started blogging. These photos are the only time it existed in this clean state.

There were a few immediate failures of note. The paint color that I painstakingly chose wasn’t “pink enough” for her liking. It’s a very pretty blush pink, but I think she wanted bubble gum pink. The canopy was also a failure. The fabric doesn’t drape right and just looks book.

This is how her bed looks as of right now. This was taken after spending 2 hours cleaning her room, btw. Her gallery wall has mostly been knocked down in favor of her own art, which she tapes to the wall. One piece is duct taped right now. :/

She has mostly abandoned her toys, so I’ve talked her into relocating most of them to the attic space above the garage. This will free up her bookshelf for books. The cube shelves will be turned into an art desk for her, because girlfriend is a prolific arteest.

I need to go through her books and pare them down a bit. She has a hard time getting rid of anything, so this might need to happen while she’s at school.

I’m hoping I can talk her into getting rid of her stack of boxes that she uses for backdrops for the videos she makes. All the pink needs to go.

What Her Room Needs:

  • Organization
  • Clean out excess stuff and furniture
  • Art desk and chair
  • Home for stuffed animals
  • Hooks to hang stuff
  • Somewhere to display her art
  • Eradicate the pink

Moody Tween Girl Room Plans

Moody refers to both her personality and the dark hues she desires. 😉

I started by having her look through rooms on pinterest. I was hoping she would love some dark, moody wallpaper. Instead, she was drawn to a buffalo check pattern because “it looks like the floor” on the game. Okay, I can deal with that. So I went ahead and bought a buffalo check comforter set before she could change her mind. No take backs, sucka!!

So from there, I tried working with the main colors of the game: black, purple, red and yellow. She vetoed the red and yellow, so we’re at buffalo check, purple and black. Again, I can work with that too. I should clarify that I HATE purple, but we’re looking for a really dark purple. Today, I will need to finalize the paint color and buy it while it’s still on sale.

I have loved this wallpaper forever, but wallpaper is not an option for a girl who likes taping stuff to walls, so I plan on using some vinyl to make a DIY version. This will also give her a proper art display.
Some FNAF fabric will be made into a pillow. She has a zillion FNAF plushies already, plus all of her fan art, so I feel like it will feel themed enough for her.
She wanted a skull pillow from Michaels the other day, but a $29 pillow doesn’t fit in with my budget! So I’ll be making her one with heat transfer vinyl.
She vetoed the yellow stool, so I’ll find something on craigslist and spray paint it to fit the room.
So far, I’ve spent $35 on the bedding. I have $65 left.

Can I do this without losing my mind? Will I get lost in her room and never find my way out? Can I design a room based on this game and make it look good? You’ll have to come back to follow the progress for this moody tween girl room!

This really makes me miss the days when she had no say and I got to decorate how I wanted:

  1. I am so glad my son never wanted his room in FNAF!! Somehow that was a short lived phase at my house!! I am looking forward to seeing the finished room though!!

  2. You definitely have a challenge on your hands but I love your plan. And I am so glad my kids are still little enough they have no say in their rooms!

    1. Enjoy it while it lasts. 🙂 I loved when they were little and I could decorate how I wanted. But hey, now they make their own school lunches so that’s something good.

  3. Oh Emy, you do have a challenge don’t you? I think you should get bonus points for having to come to some kind of consensus with a moody teenage girl. Are there bonus points? 🙂 Good luck, you can do this!

  4. I can’t wait to see how this all comes together! I feel so fortunate that I had parents who allowed me to change up my room regularly growing up and I think it is fantastic that you are allowing your daughter to express herself in her own space!

  5. Emy! Your post just made me laugh out loud! I totally get the frustration of wanting it to look a certain way, but the kiddos have other things in mind! My daughter’s room was the same apple green when she was a baby, then she moved on to pink, and now she wants purple! And both my kids went through a FNAF phase recently!! When I actually watched those videos, I couldn’t believe how weird they are!! I think your plans look amazing and you have such a great space to work with. Good luck and I’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

    1. Maybe our daughters are the same people. :O Haha. You’re lucky that the FNAF phase is over. I’m sure she will move on as soon as this room is done. 😉

  6. Oh I can not wait to see this!! I have two boys, 12 and 14.5. The 12-year-old has a pretty cool Marvel themed room. The teen is a bit of fishing and a bit adventure but it’s kinda messy. They definitely have a mind of their own as they get older. Good luck mama!

    1. My son is 13 and he’s okay with whatever I do. My daughter has definite opinions. Although right now, she has only requested that it’s clean. I destroyed it to get to the walls. 😉

  7. Girl you have your work cut out for you! Not because of the redecorating but because you are dealing with a TWEEN!!! Haha, my girls are now 19 and 16 and it will get better I promise. lol…. Right now I am dealing with a 16 year old that wants everything perfect. That’s my issue. I think this room is going to look amazing when done, perfect choice with the buffalo check. There is so much you can do with that and I love the purple! Can’t wait to see the final result!!!!

  8. I love that you are so supportive! You daughter is a lucky girl. I am quite interested to see where this challenge will take this room!
