Sangria is my favorite drink with Mexican food. It’s wine based, which I love. But I love the citrus flavors the most.

Fruit for Sangria

I used lemons, limes and orange slices for my sangria recipe, but you can add any fruit that you like. Just keep in mind that fruit does change the flavor slightly.

If you use citrus fruit for sangria, don’t add the fruit ahead of time. The citrus oils leak into the wine, making it incredibly tart.

Use a tomato knife for cutting thin slices of citrus fruit. The serrated edges slice the fruit without crushing it.

Wine for Sangria

Most recipes for sangria call for adding simple syrup to the drink, but I’m not a fan of adding sugar to anything. Plus, who has time for that?

Instead, I chose a sweet wine. This was from a local winery and was black cherry flavored. I’m not a huge fan of sweet wine on it’s own, but this stuff is delicious.

Look for a red blend or a fruit flavored variety. Ask your local wine store for a recommendation.

The orange juice also adds a lot of sweetness, so if you can’t find a sweet wine, try a malbec.

Can you make this easy sangria recipe ahead of time?

I wouldn’t recommend it because the citrus fruit will release too much oil into the wine making it tart. Plus, it contains sparkling water which gives the sangria a bit of fizz that will go flat with time.

Instead, I would prepare everything by cutting the fruit ahead of time and then you can quickly assemble the sangria when it’s time.
